My take on the baftas.
I'm sad for Julie not getting the bafta, which leaves her next to no chance of an Oscar. Although Marion Cotillard snatched it for La Vie en Rose. I've not seen it but I'm into french cinema so that feels progressive. Atonement only won two of its 14 nominations. I still say it's overrated, along with Keira's pout. I enjoy Ian McEwan novels but they don't translate well to screen.
The best film I think is No Country For Old Men. It won for direction, cinematography, and best supporting actor for Javier Bardem, all rightly so. How can a film with best direction and cinemtography not be the best film? The Lives of Others is far better than Atonement, but what is it doing in the best film category AND in the foreign language category? It won the latter.
And Atonement is 'Best Film' but fails to win 'Best British Film'! Can you make sense of that?
The Orange Rising Star award went to Shia LeBeouf. That should have gone to Ellen Page for Juno, if not Tang Wei for Lust Caution. This one is voted for by the public. I'm thinking mostly women bother to vote.
Although I've not seen the film, I'm happy to see Tilda Swinton winning one.
