| dnload speed Just some info on my experience when upgrading to a higher broadband speed. I upgarded to 16mb broadband, but found that my dnload speed had dropped dramatically and was less then my old 2mb ......
A call to my isp, cured the problem, after going through the usual, check this and check that.....
This raises the question on whether they deliberately do this.......as I tried everything I know to coax more speed out of my new modem. Why does the magic phone call suddenly result in an increase in dnload speed.
I have experienced this several times......even with other isp's. |

| Your download speed can only ever be an eighth of your connection speed, and that's the hypothetical maximum.
See, connection speed is measured in bits, wheras download speed is measured in bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte.
And skinny, ISP is Internet Service Provider, those lovely people who provide you withy your internet, for example AOL, BT internet, NTL etc. |

I have experienced this several times......even with other isp's. | Speeds can depend on all sorts of things such as contention (put simply, the number of people attempting to access the internet at the same time as you), distance from exchange and line quality. The thing is, your router has to talk to the exchange through all this mud and get what's called a sync speed. If the speed of the line happens to be low when this is happening the router gets the idea that the slow rate is what it should expect and sticks with that until you re-sync by rebooting it.

| I am amazed at the amount of people who have wireless networks, but no security.........one of which is the local cop shop.
Thats the 1st thing I enabled before starting the router....encryption and password protection etc. |

| A wired connection is vulnerable to somebody intent on accessing your PC....thats why we all use firewalls and antivirous.
But a wireless connection can be picked up inadvertantly by anyone in the vicinity by chance....and obviously a lot easier to any body with evil intent.
A man with your phobia for being tagged and labelled and observed should know that.
