Shortening Links

How do I make my links into short little links ?
When I make a link and paste the address in that box.....it spreads across the page and you have to scroll sideways, while others can make the same link into a single word like....link which isn't a link by the way....or else I wouldn't be asking this question now would I ?

It won't let me edit the above post. I typed it out in the above post but it tries to link to a hyperlink, obviously, so if i put a * in the discription take it out when you try it [*u*r*l*= put your link in here *] put your message here [*/*u*r*l*] hope it works.....here goes

I wrote an intricate article on how to do this, then my electricity supplier decided it would be a good time to cut the power again. Anyone in simple steps.

Click on 'post reply', or 'go advanced' if you've already started typing in the quick reply box.
Highlight the word(s) you want to make a link.
Click on 'Insert Link'.
Put URL in box that appears, and click OK.

Job done.

Doesn't that just give you the long version of the URL Will ?
I want to know how to put a highlighted word such as LINK that does the same thing....links to the URL (without showing it) that sometimes across spreads the page making it wider than normal....making you have to scroll the page sideways.
