85,000 prisoners in UK prisons, which are now so full that criminals are getting sentences which don't fit the crime in order to free up space. 332 paedophiles are wandering around as you read this, because there is no room for them in prison.

We NEED more prisons, but we need a new kind of prison. We need prisons which are essentially factories, the best of which would be recycling factories. This would replace the need for gyms, as the work would be labour intensive. They would be earning their keep, and wouldn't need the diversion of their TVs, game rooms, etc.

Once prison has started becoming a place to be feared again, we can get back to tackling the root causes of crime. Prison is ultimately a symptom, and not the cause.

We have a large Category A prison nearby. It causes no problem and is low lying and can hardly be seen. We need more, definitely.

It's obvious that building more prisons will be a solution for the short-term and I agree with Will about his idea that prisons should be a place to fear.

It's important that we are tough on crime, but not petty crime; I mean real crime.

It's a mad world when girls aged 12 are threatened with a prison sentence for dropping cardboard whilst the convicted peadophile walks freely in your local school.

All this nonsense about not enough prisons.....
If they can mobilise a force to travel to the Falklands and recently find the wherewithal to invade Iraq Im sure they could knock an old barracks or Holiday camp into shape temporarily.Erect a fence around an old estate or something....anything.

I think I heard that the Illegal immigrants that are in our prisons is around 10% and then there is the masses of young offenders, and repeat offenders for miner crimes.

Also prison jailers have are now at their lowest numbers on record. They'll be either privatising it or enrolling the army to deal with it soon.

Yes building more prisons and freeing the petty criminals is one solution. I suggest a shake up in the prison system entirely. From segregating criminals based on their crimes, for example all paedos on high sentence in one place, violent murderers in another and carer burglars and robbers in another and so on. So the lesser criminals would be held in another prison entirely with internal rehabilitation measures to teach trades, and other socially equipping schemes. The segregation will shield them from the mainstream offenders so consciously they are still separate and not yet apart of them, and they cant learn experienced tricks while inside.

Longer scentances for the real criminals, shorter but totally constructive internments for the 'beginners' to give them opportunities to redeem their lives and no imprisonment for very miner crimes like cannabis usage or not paying TV licence- comunity service, fines and other restrictions in the comunity like not being allowed to leave the country or go to the pub or taking away their driving licence etc could be used instead.
