Women's prisons should be shut down and replaced with small secure units, according to a report commissioned for the Home Office

It has been recommended that there should be a significant cut in the overall number of women who are sent to jail, with greater use of community punishments instead.

Perhaps this is a good idea, but it should not just be confined to female prisoners. Also, it should be supplemented with much tougher sentences for the more serious offences such as murder, or serial convicts.

That's ridiculous. Ok, most of the women jailed are jailed for small crimes, but there are quite a few serious crimes committed by women. Child murders/torturers etc.

For "small secure units" read small prisons.

Why didn't they just say some of our prisons are too big ?

If prisons are too big then why has Styal prison obtained planning permission to increase its capacity from 469 to 800 inmates.

This whole argument about women not being sent to prison can surely be levelled at male prisoners also. What makes women so different to men, especially in this day and age of "equality"?

I for one can't understand it.

Although people will kill themselves if they really want to i suppose, i think it is a failure by the prisons why this "high" amount of deaths occur.

Prison ought to be used only when there is no real alternative means of punishing criminals and/or protecting society. I suggest sending shoplifters to prison is a misuse of that means. Dye their heads orange so staff can quickly identify them and refuse them entry to the shops, unless there is a responsible chaparone with them.
