Question Gun law review

BBC NEWS | Scotland | UK rejection over gun laws review

Scottish MPs are calling for a review of current gun laws, as 1 in 3 deaths due to firearms, are children.

I'm not sure what the case is in Scotland, but I assume they have the same laws we do in regards to firearms. Personally I think the laws are fine the way they are. Most deaths due to guns are from illegal firearms, and so tightening the laws wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

What they DO need to do, is increase the punishment for illegal firearms. A minimum of ten years for even being caught with one. Life imprisonment for anyone using an illegal firearm, even if it isn't fired.

Lawful gun owners should not be punished!

Tighten up the law. But that's a joke when paltry sentences are handed out for even the worst of crimes.

This was sent to me in an email, and it sums it all up really.
A radio interview between an anti gun reporter and a pro gun General.
Guns are not the problem, it is their missuse. The same case could be put for the missuse of cars.

Quote:
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE: Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

What do they propose, i don't see anything in the link that would be punishing lawful gun owners Will.

The problem with ramping the sentences up so high is some criminals would maybe kill rather than be caught in some cases. I agree there needs to be a bigger deterrent but i don't know what that could be.

Although understandable i don't think airguns should be in the same classification as firearms...yes i do know the power of those things, before anybody jumps on me...

THey're talking about Firearms control, presumably with the idea of making it harder for legitimate owners to keep their guns, or buy one.

An airgun was used to kill a small child, I think it was mentioned in the report. I think that makes them dangerous enough to be given equally strict laws.

I agree air guns BB guns and black widow catapults should all be classed as fire arms, they all fire potentially lethal projectiles. Imho there is no legitimate reason to own any of the above.

I don't see that as a bad thing. A person can only be so clean in the eyes of the law really so i would consider this as a case of, if you've got nothing to hide you've got nothing to fear situations.

I disagree completely, well, not completely. There are laws in place for specific powered airguns and rifles to require a license. It is these that should be taken as killing machines.

Poppy, bit over the top for them to be called firearms. Limitations. A brick can be a lethal projectile.

I have seen black widows used as weapons, but I take your point.
