BBC Four is re-running its excellent Comics Britannia series at the time of writing.
BBC - BBC Four - Comics Britannia series
Comics were a very important part of my growing up process, partly because they had a strong sense of right and wrong: the bad guys and the kids who were naughty in them were thrashed because they did something wrong, where my parents would thrash us simply because they felt like it.
The effects weren't all positive mind you. To this day I have an abiding distrust of the Hun, and a rudimentary knowledge of German based on what was said by the square-jawed Jerry toadies in the comics. I can't ask the way to a station in German, but if you want to know how to surrender or signpost a minefield, I'm your man.
My favourite comic was and remains The Victor, which I freely admit I carried on buying until it ended in 1992. My abiding hero was Alf Tupper, the Tough Of The Track, a working class middle distance runner who worked as a welder by day and spent his free time running down snobs and Johnny Foreigner on the the track, fuelled by large portions of fish and chips. I eventually wrote a song about him, which became a bit of a folk club hit among middle aged men with long memories!
