Me my brother and a couple of mates went to see The Who do Quadrophenia at the MEN arena about eight years ago.
While having a beer we heard the music start and we all rushed our beers and bolted for the nearest door into the music so we don't miss a thing. turns out two or three of us burst into one of the lighting and camera positions, after arguing the toss that the start was one of the best bits, the , I Am The Sea which leads into The Real Me bit......got goose pimples just writing it....anyway we got turfed out.
After finding our seats, seats? we didn't realise it was all seated and it seAmed to put a bit of a downer on it....the whole arena was seated to watch a kind of a drama like set up with Phil Daniels narrating the story through four giant video screens....we were not amused.
By the thirdish song we were up singing our heads off flapping at our air guitars, up meaning stood up. There were a couple of big lads with us so understandably the people behind us were getting a bit pissed off about us blocking their view. One of the blokes behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked for us all to stay seated, my reply was in a pleading kind of way "fucking hell mate, i've payed for a gig which i never thought i would ever get a chance to see, i'm here to enjoy it" i was trying to be reasonable and civil but there is no way we were sitting down, he was never gunna get any joy. He swallowed and we stood up.
After about four or five more songs, and the blokes request was long forgotten, i looked behind us and the the whole stand behind us were up on their feet, about two hundred people had seen the light, and, i would like to think followed our lead, because it was just behind us directly. I'm sure the bloke behind us had a better night because we pissed him off.
The gig was absolutely superb, despite our initial reaction to the set up, i cannot express how happy i was.
Billy Idol sang one song and was crap, nuff said.
