I’m not paranoid. You are the ones with the persecution fear….you are the ones who are terrified and outraged that British culture is apparently under attack. I suggest that you are the ones who are paranoid.

Also Will you are talking about reading between the lines and thinking for yourself. That’s exactly what I’m doing. You are not reading between the lines or thinking for yourself at all. You are just reading the Daily Mail’s articles and swallowing them whole.

I’m sure a lot of the incidents that you read about the English flag being banned are completely true. But they are minor silly incidents that do not reflect the actions of the majority of people in Britain.

I am only thinking for myself by observing the fact that I don’t see there ever being any problems surrounding English flags being displayed. Whenever England are playing football the flags are absolutely everywhere and I have never even heard one person complain and I have lived in a ‘racially sensitive area’ in London for most of my life and I now live in Wales and no I’ve never even heard anyone complain about English flags here either.

I’m not a complete idiot and I do know that there are a few idiots about. But they are only a few. I’m always hearing that politically correct nutters are complaining about different things but then I ask myself where are all these complaining people? The only people I ever hear complaining are English white people. Where are all these complaining muslims and political correctness activists in forums like this? Why aren’t they defending themselves if they are so outraged by all this? Who are they?
Do you know any of them?

Ask yourselves.

Whether we like it or not, flying the flag, be it the Union flag or the George cross has undesireable connotations, due to the link with the right wing.
Large companies, feeling they may be tarred with the same brush, "advise" their fleet not to display flags.
"Right on" teachers and the like, feel the association with emblems "owned" by the right wing are taboo.

I have spouted about this topic long time, it is us, the man in the street, that has allowed the highjacking of our national emblem.
It has been tarnished by its use in the fashion industry, made into shorts for beer bellied tourists and the like, denigrating its real value as a symbol of national pride.
We need to reclaim it.....and use it for the right reasons.
Dunno Bruv, you say you lean towards Neon on this, but then all your statements seem in line with what I'm saying.

That's the first reasoned post I've seen you make Neon, well done for that. Now we can debate like adults for a while.

It was actually the world cup which escalated the whole issue tenfold. If you're wondering where all the PC idiots are, and why they aren't here defending themselves, it would never occur to them to debate any issue, and aren't capable of thinking in any other way then a tunnel-visioned, and simplistic manner. If racists are using the flag as a symbol, the answer is simple, ban the flag!

This is the kind of nonsense thinking that can only be dreamt up by the simple minded. The silly little desk jockeys and bureaucrats who need to justify their existence.

Now that we're both clear on the subject, I'd like to change tack a little. You see this isn't actually the main point of my post. The fact is that most people don't display the St. George's Cross outside of any world cup, or situation where national pride is at stake. It is because people have become to believe that it really is the property of the bigots and racists, and many people fear that they will be tarred with the same brush. Seeing the flag get banned in a thousand silly incidents is a symptom rather than the cause.

It's actually going to take the support of the media you so despise, to make people see our own flag in a different light. That's why I say we need to make it stand against small-mindedness, rather than facilitate it.

Actually thats very true. You are right that people believe they would be criticised if they displayed the English flag and I do think this is because of media persuasion.

I personally feel no need to display an English flag at any point but I think if this is something that is important to you then you should just go ahead and do it. Prove the idiots wrong )

It is not as cut and dried as that.

All symbols of national pride are on loan to the right wing.
Neon is not wrong, we all pussy foot around delicate issues.
I am proud to be English, but, the flag has long been waylaid by factions that have their own agenda. I have argued that the use of our national symbol as a piece of material to adorn items of clothing should be frowned upon by anyone with any pride in our history or its use by marginal parties to prove their integrity.
We have lost its use by default.....due to a shame associated with it.
If the flag was the Nike tick or McDonalds golden arch, lawsuits would be flying about because of the missuse....we are all super sensitive, for fear of being associated with the trade mark of right wing nationalists.

The flag needs rebranding

Glad we reached a consensus on that one. Guess we got off on the wrong foot.

In our country, by the way, to use the our threecoloured flag posible only for state purposes. At least so sounds our law. But who cares for that?
As for Great Britain I have never noticed the use of british flag too often, differently from the american.
