suppose i'm not the best person to comment on this subject as i think i'm a alcoholic.... to a small degree...but an alcoholic all the same.
| You cant be an alcoholic to a small degree Skinny....you either are or your not.
Alcoholism is another reason for trying to curb our culture of binge type drinking, and the image of the drunk as a fun macho character.
If we think there is a problem today, what about the legacy all these kids will suffer from if they continue.
Jack Lemmon in the film Days of Wine and roses.....that I saw years ago had a dramatic impact on me, and is well worth watching.
Hope you are joking Skinny......everybody seems to like a drunk....but noone wants to live with them.

You are supposed to be able to drink 20-21 units of alcohol a week without going cuckoo. There's about 2 units in a pint of beer or lager. I think i surpass this most weeks and don't worry about doubling it....you do the maths i'm not very good at that. I work for myself .I run my house and keep it clean.I don't upset anybody ....most of the time!
I don't beg on the street. I don't dress like a tramp. I don't sit in the town centre with a bottle of gut rot cider....although i used to have a bottle of cider in the local park when i was younger....abusing anybody and everybody. I'm not in and out of hospital every couple of months with CHRONIC alcohol related illnesses. I work for my money not sponge off the state ...meenig you. I don't go home and abuse my family....i haven't got any. I don't hide bottles of shorts around the house or in my tool bag at work.Infact i very rarely drink in the house at all....unless in company.
Your comments seem a bit narrow minded.Alcoholism is an affliction regadless of how you became a alcoholic.
Just to go back to UNITS per week according to them that know i'm a alcoholic ,but i don't think i've got a problem....but i would say that i'm in denial.
So make your own mind up if i'm a alcoholic or a chronic alcoholic or a drunk which is what i'm try to debate.
A sponging alcoholic would like to live with a working alcoholic i can assure you....just being awkward there Some alchis are high flying collar and shirt people .There were a few politicians ,footballers in the news over the last couple of years .

anything i haven't seen on this subject. Excuse me if i've gone off on a tangent.

| Skinny......I was not accusing or pointing fingers or anything along those lines.
But.....there is no otherway of putting this....you seem to have looked into this......... worried about it....know how many units etc.
I have lived with two people (at different times) who were alcoholic, one a women, DID keep a bottle under the sink, she was nice as pie most of the time, but "In drink" became a monster. She made excuses that she was menapausal, but I put the bin bags out, they clanked too much.
The other was a Geordie Brickie who boasted he had been around the world twice and several other places......each weekend he would go on one....a weekend drunk....he used to say "noone keeps me, I go to work everyday, Im always tidy" I would try to be asleep when he arrived home Friday night, because he wanted someone to talk to.I arrived on New Years eve and we drank together, leaving a wee dram at the bottom of the last bottle of whiskey.....he boasted months later." If I was an alcoholic I would have finished that off before now"
It was always him that mentioned alcholism....never me.
I had to move out from both of them.....both were great people....nice people
....but......
Get some help mate........

Get some help mate........ | Again...ithink i'm on a no win basis here.
I looked into the units to point out that somebody has looked into it and worked out a threshold for being an alchi.Would you frown on me if had one pint over the limit every week? that's what i meant about lesser and greater alcoholics.....i'm not worried.
I could go on the defensive but that would be construed as some sort or denial.....hence no win basis. Read into that what you will and psychowhatever it.
You seem to have made your mind up. You're limits are tighter than mine.
How many bottles of whiskey was that you had with geordie boy?It sounds like you're a reformed alchi yourself? Were you driving them to drink?....(joke)
Thanks for the concern...

| Sorry if it sounded like a lecture Skinny....I was just picking up on your posts.....some look as if you were having trouble seeing the keyboard. They could have been hastily put together though without checking.
I do enjoy a drink, but could never be near to being alcoholic, unlike my friends who drank in company or alone and until they couldn't stand up.
Have one for me.........

| I'll have a couple for you mate
In the city centres i don't think there is much we can do but police it, or let the salvation army mop up the aftermath. To try and close early .....well it is just not on, too much money involved.
In the suburbs i think there is something that can be done ,like, keep the youth clubs, parks and playing fields open.
The police could play a part, a big part, in the suburbs also. The pubs round our way are over 21's strictly, yet it's blatantly obvious that there's kids in there under 18 never mind 21.You may say it's down to the landlords to get them out....you would be right....but it's just not worth the hastle, as long as there's no trouble. If the landlord phones the police too often, you end up with a "crying wolf" syndrome, and the kids just come back.
I sound like i'm the profit of doom, i promise you i am no, i'm just mumbling.
We could stop jokes like the one at the top of this post aswell......but i won't. |

| a cretan? everyone knows this don't they? (not trying to patronise.)
a Cretan is a person from Crete. Epimenedes is the Cretan who said: "all Cretans are liars." the pre-translated original meant that everything any Cretan tells you is a lie. the question is then: is Epi telling the truth or not?
