Default Religion destroys art.

If you ever need proof of the power of religious reaction to suppress what is good and worthwhile look here:

Christian protests may leave Philip Pullman's trilogy as one of a kind - News, Film & TV - The Independent

It is the the spineless people who bow down to the protesters that make me laugh.

It's not so much a matter of spinelessness as of facing economic reality. A movie with a strong British slant is at a disadvantage in the American market from the start, so when a sequel is guaranteed to lose potential income and is tainted by the opposition of a powerful pressure group it becomes a liability.

The director's desperate attempts to describe Pullman's world as one of God's leftovers is quite funny. The books make it clear not only that organised religions oppressive but that their tenets are based on fantasies. Ironically, by directly attacking the movie and standing in the way of its commercial success the religionists are proving at least one of Pullman;s points.

I doubt the religious-right had much to do with the film not getting any sequals, and more to do with the film being crap. Some people go to watch a film JUST because it pisses off the religious nuts.

Nah, it was a good film, and it did well in the rest of the world. Its only shortcomings were a tendency to underplay specifically British elements, to gloss over the grubbiness and distortion of the familiar found in the books and not to go straight for the jugular of organised religion.
