| Goodbye Imperial Measurements The EU has declared that by 2009 it will be illegal for imperial measurements to be displayed on goods. This will apparently end the shopping "anarchy" that we have been so unfortunate to suffer all these years.
I can understand the need to have one system that is consistant throughout the world, but to make imperial measurements illegal? Only the EU could come up with such an idiotic law; this is just another infringement of our freedoms.
How long must we be dictated to like this? |

| I just dont see these "Freedoms" as being worth the time of day.
If you want a bag of frozen peas, who really cares if its wieghed in lbs or Kgs ?
If you want a length of curtain wire its the same size if its in feet and inches or centimetres.
I would go so far as to say I dont care what they call they cash in my pocket, as long as it pays for what I want in the shops.....keep your powder dry for the things that really matter

| It's more to do with the fact that we are being dictated to again. If you can be told what to see and hear, it follows that you can be told what to say and think.
We should fight EVERY single one of these legislations; you say save it for the things that relaly matter. But it doesn't work like that, our liberties are being eroded piece-meal, that way people really do think it's not worth fighting. OK it's not as important as ID cards being introduced, but it's no less relevant. The next step after ID cards will be compulsory ID cards, and who knows what after that.
Finally, if it really is so unimportant, why is is necessary to BAN it? I don't think many people would have a problem with companies being encouraged, but actually forced? This is not the way a free country should operate in my opinion. |

| I agree with you on this one Will. I can't see the problem with having both measurements. The poor old dears who've used Imperial all there lives aren't going to have a clue what 454 grams of carrots are.
And it should be 'our' choice, not the choice of European politicians. |

| The coercion is wrong I must agree, but the old dear buying the tin of carrots will merely look and see how big it is.......not even knowing or caring what the wieght is.
It is just heavy handed to enforce like this...... yes.....they didnt have to do that at decimilisation, we just changed over time, perhaps we arent changing quick enough over this.

| Just wait till we get paid in ero,s and then we,ll see who squels the loudest.
Do we honestly think that our current salaries will be converted into the equivalent euros, or will we loose out.
I guess we will loose out. |

| Perhaps people don't care too much about the measurement used for weighing products, but I must quote Forum Admin Will: 'If you can be told what to see and hear, it follows that you can be told what to say and think' I think that might already be the case. |
