The US also funded the taliban in the 1980's... or so my lecturer (programme convener) tells me. I've been meaning to find out more about this and tonight's as good as any.

Ah yes, but we all knew about the IRA. The taliban I had no idea about until my lecturer told me. I had never even heard of the taliban until 9/11.. never took much notice of current affairs.

Anyway, it has taken me 40 seconds and I have my confirmation. A JSTOR article quoting "Did the USA perceive Islamic fundamentalism as a risk? ..... The US government, well aware of the Taliban's reactionary programme, chose to support its rise ..."

Wasn't common knowledge to me. Then again I don't read the papers much and only got hooked up to the net 3 years ago.

Apart from the IRA's terror campaign being financed almost exclusively by Americans, US agencies have long involved themselves in promoting terror attacks on foreign groupings that don't happen to suit their particular interests, in the name of but at the expense of democracy. They even had - and probably still do have - a terror school at Fort Benning, whose graduates committed so many of the atrocities in El Salvador.

The above are only the nipple on the elephant (I'm fed up of saying "Tip of the iceberg"). It would take weeks to list only the American terror activities that happen to have been uncovered since the beginning of the Cold War and beyond.
