Default police cannot call a yob a yob!

Police have been banned from calling a yob..well a yob because it might offend them. I think the word yob suits them to the tee. but there are better words which they could use.

What next? Perhaps we should stop calling criminals 'criminals', just in case it offends them. This country truely is going insane, who the hell wastes our tax money coming up with these pointless policies?!? I really couldn't give a flying one if a yob gets offended, hands up all those in the country who lost any sleep over this one.

I didn't even finish reading the link it is so laughable. Are people going to edit the dictionaries? because that is all they are using:yob= "thug, yobbo, hooligan, hoodlum, ruffian, vandal" i think this needs to be thrown out of the dictionary.

WARNING: this post hints at my minority gendership. if posts from known and undisguised females bother you, please READ NO FURTHER.

in case you didn't notice, the advice not to use the word 'yob' came from the deputy chairman (sic) who is a woman. that doesn't surprise me. the "us and them" culture that this promotes is that between old men and the youth-of-today (mainly boys).

the old men are the people who 'run' this planet and are generally fucking it up. instead of looking at themselves in a deep, dark truthful mirror and sorting it, they find it easier to blame the disenchanted and disenfranchised kids. they are the same kind of old gits who think that the young should show automatic respect to old people, just because they got old.

the word 'yob' is a backward spelling of 'boy'. 'yob' is supposed to mean 'hooligan' or 'thug', but in the eyes of policemen and fearful old codgers it also means any young person who hangs out on the street with "nothing better to do". so hanging out becomes synonymous with thuggism. as a boy, you're classed as guilty (until proven innocent) just for breathing.

i guess it takes a mother to recognise these things. do any of you old gits here remember what it was to be a boy? if not i pity you.

I like the warning Syb.....chuckle chuckle.

I think the reaction to these sort of pronouncements is taken too far.....who makes these things news and puts them in the media? Someone with an agenda ?
I read this in totally the opposite way to how every body here sees it....(I did not read the link but saw it in the paper)
To my mind it is a way of warning that ALL youths on street corners are NOT yobs....and that should be borne in ind when talking of them.
So banning the word eliminates the problem.....sledge hammer and nut comes to mind.

I despair i realy do. Have you never used the word yob or yobbo ? I certainly have many a time. I agree not all teenagers on street corners are yobs but if youve got elderly parents i bet you wouldnt want them walking past a group of them in the daylight never mind the dark. You may recall me saying that i got abused the other week by a bunch of dope smoking thirteen year olds whilst walking the dogs in nearby fields and they were yobs so why shouldnt i describe them as such.

the man in the street can call the next man what he likes, but he must deal with the consequences and with his own social conscience (or lack of it). what goes around comes round. that's karma.

but this is about running and policing a country. do you not think there are examples to be set?

language creates reality. yea i read 1984 too. i just spoke to my friend who has a degree in semantics. he said something like this:

"if the powers that be speak the language of: all kids-on-the-street = yobbos = hooligans = thugs, then that is what they make happen. and so does anybody who lazily plays the same game. the knife that comes at you in the dark has your name on it." (eeek, his words.) "by similar processes osama bin laden = saddam hussein, public opinion = irrelevant, and innocent civilians getting bombed = collateral damage."

give her a raise and a promotion.

a yob is a yob, a thug is a thug, and a boy on the street has an old grandma that loves him.
