People assume that occupying Iraq with British and American troops is part of the solution. But I think its part of the problem. Whichever is right should be decided by Iraqis themselves, hence why I think Iraqis should have a referendum to decide the issue.

That’s what my first post in this entire thread was about. Can anyone suggest a better alternative to deciding what British and American forces should do now in Iraq?

According to a news item I nearly heard today.......The Americans are talking to the Iranians about working together about an Iraqi solution.....tied into the Iranians nucleur program.

I may have mis-heard it

Again, the suggestion that Iraqis should have a referendum to decide whether occupying forces should remain in Iraq or whether occupying forces should leave, was proved to be the best solution to decide what to do next with Iraq after listening to the discussion on Question Time this week.

(Reference to George Bush's decision to send an extra 20,000 troops to Iraq).

It is highly patronizing to the Iraqi people and very arrogant to claim that the US and UK should decide the future of Iraq and that it is their duty.

It is very arrogant and patronising to get involved at any time with any soveriegn countries internal politics.
This involvement goes back to when the USA was backing the very same Saddam for their own reasons not too long ago.
The only example I can think of to explain the present situation.....or is it a simile ?
The Allies have caused a wound, and are now staunching the flow of blood....they cannot walk away right now.

They can walk away and it would probably be better to.

I believe so. However neither of us really have the right to judge what is best for Iraqis except for the Iraqi people themselves, hence why I believe they should have a referendum on the issue of occupying forces in Iraq.

I agree with you for a change!

The British though have a long history of abusing the Iraqi people.

Human rights abuses in Iraq predated the rule of Saddam Hussein. In the 1920s, when Britain held a mandate from the League of Nations (predecessor of the United Nations), British occupational forces, under the command of Arthur Harris, used mustard gas and delayed action bombing to suppress Iraqi resistance to British rule, leading to numerous civilian casualties.
