As a serving soldier in Iraq I'd like to put my two pence worth in.

We were lied to by the government and entered an illegal war that was more to with oil and the capture of a bogeyman, as the USA hadn't managed to capture Bin Laden, they went for another bogeyman.

We have split the country, causing civil war between the Sunnis and the Shia. However, due to our involvement, is it not only right that we stay for the time being to help fix the country? Alot of the Shia people want the British Forces in southern Iraq. They feel that we are, slowly, cutting out the rot and corruption the country has. In fact, our biggest threat come from the Iraqi Police themselves, these are the guys ho are meant to be helping us!

If we did leave, then the deaths of the previous soldiers, two of whom I knew, would of been meaningless.

I personally think the biggest problem was more to do with the VERY delayed action by the coalition governments in starting work on the infrastructure of the country. At first, alot of the attacks on the British and US troops were out of frustration that they had lost the basic commodities, such as hospitals, food, electricity, water etc. Whilst the hospitals and schools of Baghdad were being looted, the US had an entire company of soldiers sit and watch as they guarded the Ministry of Oil. Says it all really!

However, we are making steady progress out here, although, I have thought several times that it may be better if the country was split into two, one for the Sunnis, one for the Shia. This would at least render some of the fighting obsolete, as people wouldn't be as bothered who was in charge, the Sunnis would be happy with a Sunni government in a Sunni country and vice versa with the Shia.

My guess is, if you split the country in two, the Sunni would fight for the Shia half and vice versa.

There will NEVER be peace in the middle east simply because there never has been.

Iraq was pretty quiet while Saddam was in charge.
And they had running water, electricity, law and order, schools, hospitals. The main problem they had was because of the trade restrictions imposed on them by the US.

Can I ask if you've ever witnessed any abuse of Iraqi civilians? After all, certain members of the armed forces, MP's, abuse there own men while they're in jail!

Their deaths were already meaningless, private. I want you pulled out right now so that your death won't also be meaningless.

I am sceptical to the fact that a lot of the shia muslims in Iraq want occupying forces to remain there. I believe it's just fuelling the violence.
